USING OUR EXPERTISE TO MAKE A CONTRIBUTION TO A CULTURAL-HISTORICAL AREA

Project description:

This national park with more than 10,000 hectares of contiguous mire lands is the largest mire park in North-western Europe. We were able to use our expertise to carry out nature restoration work. In support of this LIFE II project we cleared forested areas and excavated peat bogs in the Weerribben nature reserve. The released material was pumped to the Wetering West depot with the aid of a 7-km-long pressure pipeline.

The Kiersche Wijde lake and the Kerkgracht canal (the Wieden) were part of this large LIFE II project. We dug channels and ponds, cleared forested areas and excavated peat bogs to create a shore biotope. The peat bogs were excavated at various depths. The released material was pumped to a sand extraction site with the aid of a pressure pipeline, to decrease the depth of this site.

Peat bogs and narrow strips of land in peat bogs were restored in support of the De Wieden natural habitat plan. The released materials were pumped to Voornpol island using the shredder pontoon.

A lot of hard work was carried out in this cultural-historical area to retain the diversity of ponds, lakes, swamp forests, large reed plots and meadows with their flora and fauna. We have the satisfaction of looking back on working on a beautiful and special project.
