Project description:

The home of the rare marsh bird, the whiskered tern, became our area of operations under contract to the Groninger Landschap countryside association.

The objective of the project was to increase the area of water reeds/reeds in order to improve the habitat of area-dependent species such as the bittern, great reed warbler, tern and even the otter. This was accomplished by creating pools/channels, and by cutting reed lands and integrating the released materials into the foreshores. This way additional reed lands could be created. In addition to this work, forested areas were cleared, sheet piling was installed, the depth of ditches was decreased and embankments were lowered. By creating a single contiguous Zuidlaardermeer region, the Zuidlaardermeer and the surrounding nature reserves are beautifully flourishing.
